Automation in the Optical Industry

The world's leading eyewear company, EssilorLuxottica, continues to invest in automation within its N.A. Operations Network to improve the customer experience. The company's move towards automation reflects a growing trend in the retail industry, where brands are increasingly looking to enhance their customers' experiences by incorporating technology into their operations. EssilorLuxottica's investment in automation reduces wait times and increases efficiency, all of which will ultimately improve the customer experience. Additionally, a key factor for the company’s decision to invest in automation is for the benefit of employees. This innovative technology ultimately allows employees to work better and safer – reducing the risk of workplace injuries. This article will explore the benefits of automation in the eyewear industry and how EssilorLuxottica’s investment in technology is transforming the way they do business.

EssilorLuxottica’s largest distribution center is in McDonough, GA and is home to an array of advanced technology that has improved the distribution process through automation. Since 2020, the team has installed four automated put to wall machines.

This investment led to faster and more accurate sorting for the distribution hub – ultimately allowing customers to receive their orders quicker and with first-class quality. Based on the success of this technology in McDonough, the company is planning to further invest in the technology by installing two new machines at the newest distribution center located in Tijuana, MX.

The McDonough facility has also found success in improving service and quality thanks to SMAC (Single Machine Auto Closing), an automated conveyor machine to pack one-piece orders that can do the work of ten individuals. This technology has been essential to the team in driving their service KPIs and exceeding customer expectations – especially during peak seasons. The equipment can also customize customers’ orders by creating custom thank you cards, adding logos to the boxes, etc.

When investing in automation, Massimo Sapone, SVP, North America Distribution Planning and Logistics, offers this advice, “It’s critical to prioritize communication to employees when introducing new automation to the facility. Our investment in automation makes employees’ day-to-day tasks more efficient and effective, which has a deep impact on quality of life for our team members and quality of service for our customers.” This sentiment reflects the company’s commitment to putting employees first and ensuring their comfort and well-being in the workplace.

“Our investment in automation makes employees’ day-to-day tasks more efficient and effective, which has a deep impact on quality of life for our team members and quality of service for our customers.”

The Company will continue to invest in automation and plans to install new technology throughout the N.A. Network, including its facilities in Tijuana, MX and Columbus, and OH. EssilorLuxottica's investment in automation is a significant step towards providing a seamless and exceptional customer experience. By incorporating technology into its operations, the company aims to reach new service levels and exceed customer expectations. With the continued investment in automation, EssilorLuxottica is set to transform the optical industry, setting a new standard for customer service and experience while also focusing on supporting employees.
